DUBAI
The Egyptian employer of Baina Mokalam, the Filipina maid who was rescued by Ras Al Khaimah Police on Wednesday, settled her three months salary, provided her a ticket and paid damages for battering and physically hurting her for three long years.
The settlement money, totalling Dh45,000, was reached during an amicable settlement before the Court in Ras Al Khaimah, Dh22,000 of which represented the salary of Baina from January 24, 2007 up to the time she was rescued by the police on January 27, 2010.
Philippine Consul General Benito B. Valeriano told Khaleej Times that the Consulate represented Baina in the final settlement as she wanted to go home as early as possible to her hometown in Maguidanao in Mindanao south of Manila.
He said that she will depart from Dubai to Manila on Sunday aboard the Emirates Airlines with a connecting flight to General Santos City, the nearest airport to her home province.
Consul General Valeriano also said that her employer and all others who maltreated their Filipino house help can no longer hire Filipino maids as they will be blacklisted by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).
“Our Labour Attaché Virginia P. Calvez will always report to Manila employers who, in one way or another maltreated and abused our Filipino helpers requesting the POEA to immediately blacklist them so they can no longer hire a new one,” he said.

Filipino Customs
Faithfulness to the family is a tradition that is characteristic of Filipino society. This family loyalty is apparent in the fact that there are no booming businesses for retirement homes or orphanages in the Philippines.
